Steps to hire a co-op student

Follow these steps to learn how to hire a University of Cincinnati co-op student.

  1. Learn more about UC Co-op, including when students are available and how much they are typically paid on HireUC.com.

  2. Schedule a conversation with a member of UC’s Partnership Development team who can answer questions and provide guidance. Full-time student co-op positions must be mentored or supervised, career-relevant, hands-on work, paid as a W-2 employee, and evaluated with feedback completed at the end of term.

  3. Create an account in Handshake and post a job. With UC’s free job postings, you can reach thousands of skilled UC students.

  4. Recruit. We’ll help you connect with students on campus through career fairs, college-specific expos, monthly information sessions and tabling events. Some employers also sponsor projects, classes, and more.

  5. Review resumes online, select candidates and schedule interviews.

  6. Interview students on-campus, virtually, or at your place of business.

  7. Select a candidate and make an offer. Employers receive an agreement to follow all state and federal employment regulations, including EEOC and safety guidelines.

  8. After a student is hired. Complete on-boarding activities at your organization, set clear expectations of responsibilities with the student, track their progress, and provide regular feedback and mentoring. Access UC’s 2023 Guide to Starting and Growing a Co-op or Internship Program.
