Remote Work

WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER A REMOTE CO-OP?

REMOTE WORK LAB AND LEARNING CENTER

Prior to spring 2020, 43% of the U.S. workforce was already working remotely, at least part of the time. Our greatest challenge with this is in how we prepare, support, and manage remote workers, both from the professional development aspect and the technical aspect.

The UC Remote Work Lab and Learning Center provides students the opportunity to work remotely for their co-op employer and simultaneously learn how to be an effective remote worker. Working independently and remotely takes practice, experimentation, and a great deal of mentorship. The UC Remote Work Lab and Learning Center is a collaborative working space where students can be in community with one another and work through the challenges of working remotely, together.

MANAGING STUDENTS REMOTELY

As many companies move to remote work for their employees, remember that student co-ops and interns can go remote, too! UC offers the resources to help ensure a successful experience.

7 Tips for Managing Remote Co-ops and Interns

SET PARAMETERS

Before starting remote work, the supervisor and the student should agree on parameters for things like start and end dates, working hours, availability, communication and assignments, to guide the independent work the student will be doing. Use the Remote Work Form to guide that discussion and capture the terms in writing so that everyone knows what is expected.

PROVIDE TRAINING

The UC Remote Work Lab and Learning Center provides training and resources for employers to explore and learn how to develop, onboard, and manage remote work opportunities for employees and student interns. Participants can earn a certificate in Managing Remote Workers by completing our training. Contact us for more details.

Additionally, this Remote Work Curriculum is a curated collection of seven LinkedIn Learning modules compiled by Aaron Burdette, Faculty Lead for the NEXT Apprenticeship Program at the University of Cincinnati. Think of it as onboarding for a remote desk. The modules address various aspects of remote work for student co-ops and interns and takes about four and a half hours to complete. We recommend having your student co-op or intern complete the training modules as they start work.
